Wow...so this is blogging. I've enjoyed reading other people's blogs, but who knew I'd actually decide to start one of my own? It's not like I ever kept a diary as a kid. ;-)

So for those of you wondering, I'm JauntHie (or at least that's the name I chose for this blog. No, it's not my real name, and no, I don't have any problem with having an alias). I'm starting this journal to chronicle my training and participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, and whatever else comes to my wee bit of a mind. (Don't know what the Breast Cancer 3-Day is? Go to www.the3day.org and find out! It's cool!) I have absolutely no idea if anyone will find this interesting, or even read this blog, but what the hey. If nothing else, if you know me and have been wondering when I'm doing training walks and how far, this is a good place to check for info. As always, I'm happy for company. :-)

More later - need to get out the door and drive the crew. But hey, I completed an entry! Woot me!

Hm. Okay, I think I've managed to do enough basic tweaking that I can live with the styles and colors and things for now. Definitely going to have to do some serious investigation as to other tweaks later, though.

One bummer: As far as I can tell, the calendar function here is strictly for noting what days have journal entries, and how many entries. I was hoping to use the calendar to track walking days. Oh well, guess I'll just have to do it the hard way for now - in journal entries. Oh, the horror! ;-)

So, to recap activities so far, the 3-Day thoughtfully provides a 24-week training schedule, at the end of which one should be able to walk the 60 miles in 3 days, barring accidents and the like. We're just entering Week 3, which breaks down like this:

  1. Tuesday: 3 miles

  2. Thursday: 4 miles

  3. Saturday: 5 miles

  4. Sunday: 3 miles

...which makes for a grand total for the week of 15 miles, plus some cardio work on other days, which doesn't sound like a whole lot given that I'll be walking 20 miles a day for 3 days by the end of this. But hey, I figure the folks at the 3-Day org know what they're doing setting things up this way, with the gradual build-up. I'm also not stressing too much about it if I go over a bit. For those curious about my progress so far:

  • Week One: Goal is 12 miles (3/3/3/3). I walked: 12.5. Not much differential.

  • Week Two: Goal is 13 miles (3/3/4/3). I walked: 18.2 miles, mostly because there were lots of opportunities to walk that week (thanks N, M, B, C, and P!), and I was feeling much recovered from the cold I'd had.

One amusing consequence of all this walking and training is that I'm calculating out lots of distances to common destinations around my house. Thank goodness for MapQuest!

Okay, I think that's more than enough for one journal entry!
