People Suck
Sep. 17th, 2006 08:40 pm"People suck. That's my contention, and I can prove it with scratch paper and a pen." -- Bill Hicks, Rant in E-Minor
You said it, Bill. The garden vandals hit my garden AGAIN last night (among other things; they did a number on the neighborhood, including knocking over a stop sign and one of those free-standing basketball hoops). The damage was severe enough this time that I called the police and filed a report. Of my four curbside beds, only one is still relatively untouched, and even that one had the nicotiana sylvestris ripped out by the roots and one of my poppies mangled. The whole garden is blocked off right now with caution tape and surveyor's sticks, and I'll have to think a bit about what I want to replant there. In the words of the nice elderly lady who has complimented me on the garden before (she walks by my place regularly on her way to and from the store) and who was horrified by the damage when passing by today, "plant something next time that'll fight back - like roses or something stickery." Indeed. I'm halfway inclined to stay up tonight watching, just in case the assholes return. At least one of my neighbors caught a glimpse of them this time - three young men - although unfortunately not well enough to describe them enough for police ID. Figures it'd be teenaged/college age males - they seem to be the most wantonly destructive of the usual types around here.
In other news,
fisherbear had his artist's reception for his current photography show on Saturday. Various folks had pressed him to have one, although in retrospect I cannot think why, as none of those folks actually came. The turnout was very slight, indeed - three family members, five friends, and one of fisherbear's co-workers. However, what we lacked in quantity was more than made up for in quality. After the reception we went out to dinner with Luthien and RocketMan, neither of which we had seen for ages. It was good to catch up with them in person. However, I definitely think I'll skip having an artist's reception when my show goes up in November - it's a lot of work, and I doubt I would have any better luck in the turnout department.

Let me know if you need help replanting anything. :)

Definitely thinking roses would be good, and maybe blackberries even though they'll take over the world some day if left to their own. You might also give thought to poison oak or stinging nettle, just to be really perverse. Have you thought about sprinkling itching powder on what's left right now? That might dissuade the bastards.
Sorry I missed the reception, but as you know I was out o' town. Glad you got to catch up with luthien-t and rockteman! I talked to her on the phone the other day, but not for nearly long enough.
