monkeybard and I went to the Glitter Sale this morning. I'd never been before; I'd only heard
monkeybard and some others talk about it. It was a mob scene - hordes of women, girls, and a few brave (and/or bewildered) men charged into the store when the doors opened at 9 a.m. and headed straight for the Glitter Sale rooms. I didn't have anything I had to find, but I wanted to look for a dressy overcoat to go with fancier wear, and maybe a gown for some of the dressier holiday parties coming up. I found both: a vintage velvet knee-length coat that feels very much like a cloak with three-quarter-length sleeves, and a halter-style gown in the most unbelievable shade of bright coral. It's not a shade that looks good on most people in my ethnic group, but thanks to Grandpa, it looks good on me.
Monkeybard found a fabulous green velvet gown, a vintage dress-and-coat 2-piece ensemble, and a spiffy purse. And best of all, neither of us spent even a quarter of what these things would have cost in the regular stores. :-)
I was a little hard-pressed to deal with the crowding and all the people at the Glitter Sale, but I managed. Having a shopping buddy there with me was definitely a plus; the event wouldn't be nearly as much fun (and would be much harder to do) without one. It was also made a lot easier by how friendly and helpful everyone was, despite the crowding and the theoretical competition for items. A similar event in other cities tends to bring out the worst in people, but here perfect strangers were helping each other zip up, or complimenting someone on how the item looked on them, or handing them a pair of shoes that they saw that just happened to go with the gown the other person was wearing. It was really a hoot, and rather gratifying to see how nice regular people are to each other under most circumstances. Definitely a necessary reminder, particularly in the thick of political silly season.
Thanks for inviting me,
monkeybard!
