Incidents of garden vandalization aside, I live in a pretty safe neighborhood. More proof of this: the utter failure of any kind of bad event happening last night.
fisherbear and I must have forgotten to throw the bolt before going to bed last night, because some time during the night a particularly strong gust of wind must have blown the door open. (The fact that I didn't wake up when this happened is another indication that I'm just too darn tired these days, but I digress.) When I walked out to the front of the house at 5:45 this morning, the door was half-ajar. Immediate panic time, as two thoughts rush immediately through my head: "Is anything missing?" and "Where are our CATS?" Fortunately nothing was missing, and there was no indication that anyone had come near our front door. As for the cats, our dumb-bunny kitty M had been sleeping in our room and hadn't even noticed the open door. Our smart kitty, J, was waiting in the kitchen for his breakfast - his outer coat thoroughly wet and looking incredibly pleased with himself. (At this time of year he has quite the undercoat, which kept him warm and dry.) He'd obviously gone out for quite some time, probably terrorized the neighborhood cats and hunted small critters, and had returned safe, sound, and ready for some chow. He doesn't mind being a purely indoor cat (he stays indoors except when I take him out on a leash), but he obviously wouldn't mind being an indoor-outdoor cat, either. I toweled him off and told him what a good kitty he was, to which he purred "I know" and looked smug.
