Like riding a bicycle
Nov. 12th, 2006 09:12 amIt's been a while since I've had to work all weekend, but thanks to a Friday-afternoon crisis precipitated by another team, that's exactly what I've been doing this weekend. I was able to work from home yesterday (and thereby avoided having to deal with Husky traffic), but I was at my desk shortly after 8 this morning, and I'll probably be here at least until mid-afternoon.
On the one hand, there's a particular kind of "adrenaline rush" that comes with this sort of thing that helps carry you through. And since I knew on Friday that I'd be working all weekend, I didn't have to get myself ramped up; I just didn't relax into the "ah, the weekend" mode. And it looks like I'll be able to get everything done in time for our 7 a.m. Monday deadline.
On the other hand, I'm not getting anything done around the house or on my outside-of-work projects or cooking or cleaning or any of the other gazillion things that need to be done (other than dropping off my business cards at the show when they opened the doors this morning, which I did on the way into the office). I'm working this weekend, which inherently kind of sucks.
But then again, when driving into work this morning I auto-piloted the way in using the route I used to go to my former building, where working weekends was pretty much par for the course. There's no such automatic-pilot instinct for my new building on the weekends, for which I am most grateful.
So yeah, it sucks, but it could be so much worse. And my building is pretty much a ghost town right now, which is also a good thing - it means that there aren't too many of us having to pull duty this weekend.
