Electricity, electricity...
Dec. 18th, 2006 08:19 amIf we were in any doubts about how severe the windstorm had been (which we weren't), a trip to Fred Meyer on Saturday brought it home to us. Trees were down all along the length of 35th, trees that have been there literally all my life. Many had taken up huge chunks of concrete with them when they fell. Some had fallen on houses; some had fallen on cars; and some were listing precariously, snared in power lines. Yeesh.
My folks got their power back Friday afternoon, but I still have several friends who do not have power, and there are still large sections of the landscape-line at night that remain black holes. The line crews are working heroic, insane shifts trying to get everything repaired, but it's a huge mess.
In other news, this weekend featured the annual Rankin-Bass/Gingerbread party. Much gingerbread was decorated, ranging from giant squid to quaint cottages with stained-glass windows, with the occasional pyramid, snowboarder, MS Bill v1.0 Voodoo Doll, and scene from the Spanish Inquisition thrown in (no one expects the Spanish Inquisition!). Two Rankin-Bass videos were played, much to the intrigue of Little Miss Hatbox, who naturally had not seen them (being five and Jewish) and the MST3K-ing impulses of the rest of us. I know I had a blast, and I hope everyone else did too.
One aspect of the party brought something to my attention, though. Most of the attendees were running tired/frazzled/holiday-hyper, as this was just one event of a full calendar's worth of events this month. For example, some had parties every day of every weekend to attend; others had attended four events just this one weekend. And then there's me - for whom this event is the only party in December before Christmas, and one of only two this month (the other being a New Year's Eve party). Am I really that much of an antisocial geek, that unpopular, or just that out of it? It makes one wonder.

Geek, yes. Anti-social, only when forced. Unpopular, not in the least. Out of it...only you can say for certain. ;)
