New appliances are spiffy

fisherbear took it apart to investigate the source of the horrible squealing noise, hoping to find something easy to fix, like a broken bearing. Instead he found a big patch of worn, polished metal where the metal-on-metal friction had worn things smooth. In other words, a no-hoper. And the washer to this set had been marked "small, large, DO NOT USE" on the size loader dial for years, because of a tendency to leak water when "extra large" was selected. Clearly, it was time for a new set.
So after doing some online research into high-efficieny washers and dryers, we set off for the locally owned, we'll-deliver-for-free-and-haul-away-your-old-stuff-for-free-too, we'll-come-out-and-repair-for-you-under-warranty appliance store, Almvig's. After much hemming and hawing and kicking of tires, we decided on a washer and dryer set. The delivery people installed them yesterday. And oh, they run beautifully. And they're so much quieter!
...or at least they are to me. Fisherbear insists that the washer makes a really loud high-pitched squeal, at least at the start. Apparently it's high-enough pitched that I can't really hear it. I've been aware for years that fisherbear's extreme high end hearing is more acute than mine, but this makes me wonder whether I actually have some high-end loss, or if it's just that fisherbear's ears really are tuned that much higher. I know he claims he could hear bats whenever they were out as a kid, so I know he had a head start on me (to the best of my knowledge I've never heard a bat). It's enough of a difference in reactions that we're thinking about hooking up a microphone in the laundry space, recording the sound, and analyzing it on the computer to see what frequency it's at (assuming he's not just having me on).
In the meantime, though, I am reveling in doing laundry. :-)
