One of the book series that I really, really adored as a kid was The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper. Comprised of five related books (that's right; not a trilogy, not an unending series, but a sequence), beautifully written, and including one of the very few original takes on Arthurian legend I've ever encountered (much less could stand), it holds a pride of place on my bookshelves to this very day.
Today, when glancing over headlines while sipping my morning cuppa, I came across this:
Ian McShane is Rising
...an annoucement of the casting of Ian McShane as Merriman Lyon, in the currently in pre-production The Dark is Rising, a film adaptation of the second novel of the series (and yes, there are many darn good reasons to make a film of the second novel first. Trust me. I'm pretty sure I read the second one first, and it really makes more sense that way). Filming starts this year.
I was so surprised I darn near choked on my coffee.
All I can say is that I really really REALLY hope they don't mess this one up. I'm somewhat afraid, though, particularly since the director has at least one really egregious political hackjob to his name, and Susan isn't writing the screenplay.
And this is NOT a piece of my childhood I ever expected to make it to the silver screen. What's next, a film of The Children of Green Knowe?
Oh wait, IMDB has an entry for that... The BBC made a miniseries? Holy guacamole! I wonder if it's available on DVD...?

Even better...
