You have GOT to be kidding me
Feb. 14th, 2007 08:45 amThis morning's glance at the news brought to light this particular article in the New York Times:
So Naughty, So Nice
...detailing the cake that is apparently all the current rage in New York - Red Velvet Cake.
My gods. In some details the Republicans really have succeeded in their wet dream of returning us all to the 1950's, haven't they?
I've made Red Velvet cake a few times before (or as my grandmother's recipe called it, Fire Engine Cake), most recently for an opening-night party for a period-appropriate show. And trust me, the recipe requires a truly terrifying amount of red food coloring. While the cake can be tasty, it's not something you want to eat very often (if at all). The idea that it's the "in" cake for the New York Trendy boggles my mind.
(Of course, the fact that the Waldorf-Astoria refuses to use red food coloring and instead uses beets for their Red Velvet Cake makes me giggle even more. Their points for creativity are far outweighed by their demerits for snootiness. If you're gonna wallow in 50's/Southern nostalgia, don't go getting all yuppie and organic and "natural foods" with it.)
