I did an abbreviated workout this morning, since today was (and is) print-like-a-maniac day. So instead of worrying about something to listen to or watch, I let it slide and watched the bit of "VH1 Top 20 Videos" that was on (hey, it's music, good enough to pedal to). I don't have much use for the modern pop princes and princesses, but I was startled to see that of the three-four videos I watched (more commerical than video, obviously), two of them had definite retro-to-the-forties homages. One was Scarlet Johannsen, who seems to have made a career out of being a retro-glamour figure, so it wasn't too surprising (although what she was doing in a Justin Timberlake video is beyond me). However, the other was very surprising, at least to me. Apparently Christina Aguleira is a big Andrews Sisters fan, enough so that she not only wrote a song in that style, but shot an entire video in that mode - right down to having herself play all three sisters onstage (not to mention half the other people in the video). And what's even more surprising to me is that it not only didn't suck, it was really quite good. Innuendo with the subtlety of being hit by a bus, but very musical and true to the form.

If you're curious (and if I've copied the link correctly), you can watch it here. Otherwise you'll have to go find it on VH1.com - but it's not hard. And it's worth giving a look/listen to, if you're a sucker for 1940's pop. If nothing else, the set designer and costumer both deserve serious props for nailing the color palette.

Maybe the two 1940's homages were a coincidence. But I wonder if it isn't something more than that; a reaction perhaps to the war, its duration, and a longing for a much cleaner, simpler, easier war, as WWII looks to us now, 60-plus years from the actual event.
