LawyerLady hosted an Oscar-watching party last night. It was lovely; a nice low-key event with great company (LawyerLady, humilitas, and [livejournal.com profile] hiker_chick), wonderful homemade soup, nibblies, and a commercial-free-TiVo-cast on LawyerLady's enormous TV screen. Although I'm not an Ellen DeGeneres fan, I thought the broadcast itself was very well done. I loved the Pilobous Company's homages (and how cool is it that they were hired to appear?), the sound effects choir, and the Will Ferrell musical skit - but more than that, I enjoyed the "hey, we're celebrating the movies, let's celebrate the movies!" vibe. While there were definitely bits that could have been cut for pacing, overall the broadcast didn't feel long to me.

Of course I saw exactly ZERO of the movies up for the awards this year, so I'm sure that colored my opinion of the affair. I really didn't care who won what, although I was rooting for Scorcese to finally get an Oscar, just because. And he did. And he also visibly cried for joy when his editor won, which was very sweet. Yay them.

And then there were the outfits to dish, which we did. By and large people looked fairly good. The styles were fairly kind, and generally speaking the stylists remembered to do their charges' hair and makeup appropriate to the occasion. I don't understand the love the critics have for Penelope Cruz's pink dress, though. Sure, she looks good in anything, but somewhere out there a 70's bathroom is missing its faded pink shag carpet - it got turned into the yards of skirt on that dress. Yikes! Beyonce also managed to find a dress that made her look frumpy and heavy - a difficult thing to do given how gorgeous she is. And I don't know what happened to Phillip Seymour Hoffman's hair, but wow was that ugly.

This has been your completely useless Hollywood gossip/commentary entry from me for the month, if not the year.

I wouldn't think so (disclaimer: didn't watch the Oscar's, completely out of the loop). She's gorgeous, but her body is decidedly curvy, and if she wears anything that doesn't play up her curves and flatter them effectively (say, something cut for a stick thin chick with a boyish figure) she's either going to look frumpy or decidedly x-rated.

You have a point; by today's standards she does indeed have curves (which is to say she actually has some). But all the same, I have to admit that I think this (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17299093/displaymode/1107//s/2/framenumber/9) is more-or-less designed for curvy - and yet manages to make her look frumpy (what with the barnacles across the boobs and shoulder) and heavy (no way are her hips THAT broad). And the color doesn't do her any favors, either.

Mmm. I think I'd say that it's designed to make the most of someone's rather less ample curves. It's definitely not designed to flatter curvier hips, even if it does highlight the difference between chest and waist circumference well. It kind of makes her look like a 1950's era comic book character... but not in a particularly good way. And I have to agree with you on the color.

I loved the bodice on Peneope Cruz's gown, but yeah that shag skirt needed to go.

I think Beyonce's dress wasn't so much the problem as the fact that no one taught her how to move in it. The hands on the hips was not the way to show it off. As NordicBoy said, "You're not in the 'hood, Beyonce." She needed to stand up properly.

True. Better posture would have been a start...but still, even her legs looked clunky and wrong coming out of that slit. Then again, maybe with better posture her leg wouldn't have been exposed quite that way.

On the other hand, the color still sucked for her. And as fabulous as Penelope's bodice was...that skirt was a horror. Night of the Living Bath Mat, I tell you!

BTW, what did you think of Kirsten Dunst's dress with the dickie?

I wanted to like it, but I didn't. It didn't suit her. Of course, she couldn't wear something to show off her curves because at present she has none. Girlfriend could use a milkshake. 5-10 pounds would not go amiss on her right now.

I believe you'll find this amusing. It seems we're not alone in our opinions of Penelope's gown. ;->
