Bagpipe envy
Apr. 7th, 2005 08:16 amDid you know that Canadian geese suffer from bagpipe envy?
Neither did I, until this morning.
I was wandering alone for my morning walk, after failing to hook up with GPSMan (hey, dude, where were you?). I was just starting to consider whether I should keep walking or cut the walk short and get back to the pile o' work waiting for me when a wisp of music came to my ears. Rather startled, I realized it sounded like bagpipes - and live pipes at that, not some recording. Intrigued, I altered my path in a hunt for the piper. As I got closer, I heard a tremendous hooting and honking start up. I rounded a corner, and there was a woman practicing her pipes. On the nearest rooftop to her, squawking and staring in suspicious, admiring envy, was a gaggle of Canadian geese. There was no question that they were highly excited by the bagpipes, and considered the piper to be the unquestioned queen of the lawn.
"They seem to like it," the piper said to me, pausing in her practicing. "I'm not sure anyone else does, though."
On the contrary. I loved it. It made my morning. Pipe on, lady!
