[livejournal.com profile] fisherbear and I are on vacation this week, travelling to see friends. We were supposed to be gone all week. However, the second leg of the trip was to San Diego...which as everyone knows is one big mess right now.

Intelligence dictates that one should NOT fly into a federally-declared disaster zone in the middle of said disaster (fires are still in progress, although thankfully our friends and their homes all are okay).

Ethically, I absolutely feel that fisherbear and I (or any other tourists) have no business taking up a hotel room when there are upwards of half a million people displaced and needing a place to stay.

Socially I am extremely bummed that I will miss seeing my friends, going to Ryalin's fabu Halloween party, seeing Mero-San and Beautiful River perform in concert, and etectera.

And financially I am rather annoyed that doing the right thing is so bloody expensive. Changing plane tickets at the last minute is normally an expensive habit, but you'd think they'd at least consider waiving the "change ticket" fee when you are trying to AVOID adding yourselves to the disaster zone, if not discount your fare, y'know?

Sigh. Oh well, at least things look like they might be improving a bit fire-wise, and I have the internal satisfaction of knowing I'm doing the right thing, however inconvenient, annoying, or expensive.

I know what you mean. I'm way bummed not to be going, but I think it's for the best. And on the positive side, there's still the party at Si&Di's haunted abode.

I'm thinking that perhaps a southerly visit around Ren Faire time might be in order. ;)
