Grandma J got run over by a reindeer...
Dec. 15th, 2007 10:28 pm...or to be specific, a condition called diverticulosis, which she's had for years. Every so often this condition results in her bleeding internally, which is generally not a good thing, and really not a good thing when you're almost 98 years old. She went into the hospital on Thursday, and she's still there now, but she's improving rapidly now that she's had several pints of blood and IVs and all that good stuff.
fisherbear and I had a very good visit with her today; she was in lively spirits, was thrilled to get a copy of the New York Times to read, and was pleased that I had some big band music on my iPod that she could listen to. She kept singing "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific every so often, so I'm off to try and find a recording of that to put on my iPod for her as well. Undoubtedly she'll be a bit crankier tomorrow, since the local PBS stations are in pledge break season and didn't have Lawrence Welk on at the usual time. However, they were playing "Great Moments from the Met" instead, so hopefully the New York and classical connections will have appeased her somewhat. (Why the public broadcast stations don't make more of an effort to keep their very large but easily cranky seniors-who-tune-in-for-LW audience appeased during pledge season by running LW-related pledge sessions during the usual time, I don't know.)
Anyhow, it looks like everything will be fine, but I've got Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer stuck in my head. Twisted, I know, but there it is.
In other news, I went to the Medieval Women's Choir's "Nowel" concert tonight. Humilitas was in fine voice, and it was an awesome show, helped considerably by the guest director for the season and the skillful staging that took advantage of St. James' acoustics. It's the first concert I can remember since leaving the choir that I really, really was sorry not to have been a part of. Not to say that their other concerts haven't been great - they have - but the guest for the season is a choir person first and foremost, and it shows. As fantastic as Margriet is in understanding the music, she doesn't know much about voice, and always seems rather more interested in the medieval instrumentals, which are usually my least favorite part (particularly when they bring out the damned tintunabulorium). There were ZERO instrumentals in this concert, just pure vocal yumminess directed by someone who obviously knew how to direct a choir. And the piece selection was fab. Yum!

Date: 2007-12-19 07:00 pm (UTC)I read about the concert when it was in the paper the other day, but of course had my own show to do that night. I was bummed because it sounded like a program I would have dug--and reading about it think I was right. Ah well. Glad you enjoyed it!
