I hadn't quite forgotten that yesterday was a holiday for a lot of people, but I hadn't really thought much about it either, until late in the day. Traffic was practically nonexistent, and so I got off the bus at my stop about ten minutes earlier than usual.

And it was like stepping into an entirely different world. A world where it was light out. I stopped and stared, because the street lights weren't on, the sky was bright with the pearlescent glow of the just-set sun, and I could see everything. The light faded as I walked home, but it was still bright twilight by the time I unlocked the front door.

Ten minutes. Ten minutes into the future, and it will no longer be dark out when I leave the house and when I get back home. Those ten minutes will probably take about two or three weeks to arrive, but I've had a glimpse of the future, and I can wait, knowing that it really is on its way.

And speaking of the future...we'll have a new President of the U.S. in about an hour and a half. Work has set up the conference center to broadcast the inauguration, and they're providing a light breakfast on a first-come, first-served basis. I don't think I'll have time to wander over and observe, but I probably will connect my desktop to the proxy they've set up to stream the broadcast to our desks.
