I have to keep telling myself that, because GardenMANIA is creeping up on me in leaps and bounds, aided and abetted by a) all the plant catalogs that keep finding their way to my door and b) the sunshine that is currently pouring over the landscape. I find myself starting to make PLANS for the garden this year. And LISTS. A goodly number of my gardening books have made their way into the pile of books-I-am-reading. Which is all INSANE, as I have no time for this right now, and it's not even SPRING yet!
I find myself having internal arguments like this:
Practical Me (PM): Look, you inner gardener you. It's still COLD outside. It was freakin' SNOWING yesterday. It was a HARD FROST this morning. And we have many, many deadlines right now, not to mention a ton of INDOOR work to get done. Back off. It's not time to garden yet.
Gardener Me (GM): But it's LIGHT OUT when I get home! And almost light when I leave in the morning! That means it's time to start gardening!
PM: No it does not mean any such thing. It's early FEBRUARY. It's still too cold and too early to even scatter the poppy seeds, much less start fussing over the vegetable gardens. And I have WORK to do in those daylight hours, you nut!
GM: Yes, I have work to do - in the yard! Look at all the deadheading and winter trimming back I need to do! And I need to survey what didn't make it through the winter and figure out what I'll plant to replace it! The flower and garden show is coming up in less than two weeks! I need to have PLANS for that! And purchase lists!
PM: Plans for the garden show are good, yes. But you don't necessarily need to BUY anything there. And you don't have to dig the dead things out of the garden while the ground is still FROZEN.
GM: But I MUST buy things at the garden show! They have many nifty wonderful things to buy and plant, all conveniently together under one giant roof! I must be ready for...OMIGOD, is that a baby BLACKBERRY vine coming up in the herb bed???
PM: Hey, let's not get off-track. Focus here. I need you to concentrate on everything I have to get done BEFORE I can get to the gardening.
GM: AIGH! And there's a DANDELION!!! MUST GARDEN NOW! MUST DESTROY EVIL WEEDS!!! DIE BLACKBERRY DIE!!!
I like the sunshine, but for my sanity's sake, I hope it either starts raining and doesn't let up for two weeks or we get another layer of snow on the ground.

I just about froze my butt off on Sunday whilst planting black raspberry starts.
But they're in the ground now.
