Flowers, flowers, everywhere

jaunthieI've been looking forward to today for weeks. Today was the day, and it dawned bright and glorious and fairly cold (frost all over the place). Jake arrived this morning at my place, and the two of us made our way to this year's Flower and Garden Show. It's been an annual pilgrimage for years, an orgy of display gardens and vendors and lectures and workshops and flowers flowers flowers EVERYWHERE. You can smell the fragrance of thousands of blooms the moment you step into the venue, and it travels with you wherever you go.
You couldn't ask for a better friend to go with to this kind of event than Jake. She's easily as plant-mad as I am, probably more so, and loves many of the same plants that Ido. She and I pledged that we'd help keep each other from spending money on various temptations, like daliahs for her and too many lilies for me (I did give myself permission to buy a few new lily bulbs if I found a good deal on an oriental variety). By and large I think we did fairly well by each other, too. She came away with a dahlia catalog but no actual dahlias, and I came away with just one bag of bigh, healthy lily bulbs, which at $20 for 10 were a fantastic deal. (She bought a bag of those too.) Neither of us wound up buying any peonies, despite repeated and dreadful temptation. And we also had an absolute blast, browsing the vendor booths, ogling the display gardens, smelling practically every hyacinth and lily and daphne and viburnum that presented itself. I don't often get a chance to spend an entire day with her, so that made it even more special.
A lovely day, and yet more fantastic memories to savor. Such happy memories are a fitting way to send off the garden show, if this does indeed prove to be its final year.
