Real or fictional?

tylik has had several fascinating posts on her blog recently. It all started when someone accused her of being a fictional character because she coudln't possibly be real. She even followed up with a poll on the subject. The posts and responses arguing for and against her existence as a real person/fictional character have been epic, and well worth checking out.

My response to her original question summed up with: "You're too implausible to be fictional. You must actually exist." Which is true, but it got me thinking about myself and my life and how the assumptions and logic in that statement would apply to me. From my perspective, my life history and day-to-day existence are completely ordinary, nothing at all unusual or implausible about it. Since I think I'm completely plausible, I therefore must be fictional. But I suspect I'm not a very interesting character; I might even be two-dimensional stereotypical set dressing.

This is a very odd thing to think about one's self and one's life. So I'm going to borrow her idea of a poll and explore this a little further. Feel free to reply in the poll and in comments below.

Considering we've met in person...and you didn't run away screaming the first time we met (wanting to or thinking about it are okay), I'd definitely say you're real.

Unless we're both fictional. Hm....

Don't we get classic superhero fiction as an option?

Uh-oh - I think you might be onto something there. That could get very, very messy depending on which secret identity is about to give way... ;-)
