Thank goodness for co-workers
May. 16th, 2009 01:04 pmA couple of weeks ago I decided to participate in the Race for the Cure. This is the kind of event that requires fundraising (minimum on this event is $150), so I sent out emails to friends and family asking for donations. As of this past Tuesday afternoon, I'd gotten one contribution (from my fantastic brother) and one "love to but we're already maxed out" reply email from a friend. Other than that, silence.
Crickets, even.
I freely admit that I suck at fundraising. I don't like to ask, much less make a big deal of it, and I'd much rather not solicit donations from anyone I don't actually know well. This is not a useful set of traits when it comes to raising cash. I was starting to worry that I'd have to cough up the rest of the funds myself. So I bit the bullet and sent out a second round of "please sponsor me" mails on Tuesday evening, this time to my co-workers.
And as of Friday morning, I'd met and passed my minimum fundraising goal. Not to mention I'd gotten quite a few "hey, really cool that you're doing this!" mails, which are always gratifying. I'm still fundraising, mind you; the team I'm on has a ways to go before it makes its goal, and even if it weren't, I'm still hoping to raise even more money for the Komen Foundation. But I won't have to shell out any more of my own $$$ beyond the entry fee for the event in order to participate.
You can say a lot of things about the company where I work and the people that work there. Goodness knows I frequently do. But one thing that must be said is that when it comes to good causes, the people I work with are second to none in terms of generosity, support, and enthusiasm. They completely kick ass.
It's a nice reminder, both of the goodness of my fellow employees, and how lucky I am.
