Friend 1: Hey, I have a really random question but I know you'll know the answer. Do you know anything about cuff links...?
Me: Um, yeah, some - standard or French?
Friend 1: I *knew* you were the right person to call!
Okay, so it wasn't cuff links, but I was indeed able to help my friend get the item in question safely unfastened.
Friend 2: Hey, want to walk to such-and-such a place, shop for random supplies, walk back to my place, and help make cunning things out of unexpected items X and Y?
Me: Yeah, that sounds like fun!
It wasn't quite phrased like that, of course, but it might as well have been, and I was very glad of the invite. In the course of said walking adventure, we wound up stopping at a restaurant that neither of us had been to yet. Both of our husbands were elsewhere, so we had a nice dinner date together. And oh my GODS was the food good! We had a lovely meal of various itsy-bitsy tapas, including jitanitos (dates wrapped in turkey bacon, absolutely sublime) and gambas pil pil (spicy shrimp, so big and tasty) and mussels cooked in wine and paprika (of which my friend volunteered to be tossed into a vat of so she could eat her way out of it), not to mention spinach with pine nuts, and house-made sausage, and this truly divine and light concoction made from dried codfish. We also split a half pitcher of sangria, so it's just as well that we walked there and had no car to worry about. It was most excellent, and as my friend rightly said, it is so nice to have friends with whom one eats both compatibly and well. It is also most excellent to have friends to share random walking adventures with!
