Happy geek
Jun. 6th, 2009 08:25 pmI finally got a chance to see the Star Trek movie today. I'm always a little dubious about reboots and remakes, largely because I deplore the fiscal "conservatism" that leaves studios unwilling to take chances on original stories - new works - in favor of "known quantities."
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The actors had fantastic chemistry, the frank acknowledgement of this being an alternate universe take was refreshing, and the sound effect of the viewscreen chirping...that went right to the cellular level of the geek in me and released all kinds of glee. I grew up with Star Trek, and I still think that the universe Roddenberry created is a fantastic place for stories. I wasn't a fan of all the different Star Trek shows - some of them were pretty bad - but I have a soft spot for the idea of it, the weekly television visit to that world and the people in it.
I might just have to go see it again.

Everyone's too busy talking about the current movie so far to discuss it, but they built themselves a very high bar for the next movie - if the next one stumbles, the reboot universe could lose a whole lot of goodwill quickly.
