A lovely Sunday for a walk
Jun. 9th, 2009 10:01 amThis was not a weekend for sleeping in. I had early-morning obligations both days; the gym on Saturday, and Sunday... Sunday was the Race for the Cure. Even though our team event was the last one on the schedule, it was still an 8:30 a.m. start. I got up very early, got prepped, and walked out to catch the bus downtown with
monkeybardand NordicBoy. We met up with the rest of the team at the stadium, with the help of cell phones and Norwegian flags.
We couldn't have asked for better weather, or a nicer course. They shut down the viaduct for us, so we had a wonderful waterfront walk entirely fenced off from the rest of downtown traffic. (I swear, they need to ditch the idea of replacing the viaduct with a tunnel, and instead revamp/replace the viaduct with another structure with light rail below and walk/bike path above. It's a gorgeous view, and this city is full of people who would use it for commuting.) Between the crowds and the need to push a stroller, we didn't go very fast at all, but then again, speed wasn't the point. It was truly inspiring to see the huge numbers of people participating in the event. Judging from the numbers handed out to each racer, there were well over 18,000 participants in the events!
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated to me and to the team. I didn't have a camera, but other teammates did, so hopefully I'll get pictures and be able to post some soon.
