The last three days have been moderately insane, even by my standards. I knew going into this weekend that I had a very busy two days ahead of me. What I did *not* know was that choosing to eat some cherries with lunch on Friday would complicate things several times over.

Well, I suspect it was the cherries. It was certainly *something*, because shortly after eating lunch on Friday, my stomach started cramping, I started feeling queasy, and any hopes I had of getting anything done the rest of the day pretty much went right out the window. As near as I can guess, I had a relatively mild case of food poisoning. [livejournal.com profile] fisherbear picked me up from work, and I spent the rest of the day either asleep or crashed out on the couch with a bucket handy, distracting myself from my very unhappy stomach with some Doctor Who. Gah.

I had intended to make some goodies for MamaBear's garden party on Saturday, but given the way I felt Friday, that idea went by the wayside. Fortunately I woke up on Saturday morning feeling delicate but much improved from Friday. We left the house around 10:25 to catch the 11:25 ferry to her house...

...and spent over an hour stuck on the off-ramp for the ferry exit. We hadn't realized there was a special Sounders game (and who the heck thought it was a good idea to make the ferry traffic exit the same one as the sports stadiums?), and to make matters worse, an accident happened on the off-ramp about 5 minutes before we got there, totally shutting everything down. Needless to say, we missed our ferry, and by the time we got clear of the mess, the next ferry would have gotten us there more than an hour after the party was supposed to start. So we took the overland route, fighting through yet more godsawful traffic in spots (don't get me started) and got there only half-an-hour late.

The bad adventures in traffic were all worth it, though. MamaBear's party was lovely, and we had a great time socializing with everyone. It was good to say goodbye to MamaBear's property in style (she's moving in two weeks and will be much closer to us, hurrah!). Several of us came away with plants and garden stuff, which she will not be able to take with her to the new place for space reasons. And my stomach basically behaved itself (granted, I was very careful what I ate from MamaBear's lovely spread, but still), both during all the commuting and at the party itself. In fact, I felt enough better by the time we got home on Saturday night that I went ahead with plans to bake lavender shortbread for the Sunday excursion.

Sunday morning, fisherbear dropped me off at the ferry terminal bright and early so I could meet up with MamaBear, Jake, MasterKnitter (Jake's mom), and T for a communal excursion to the Lavender Festival. I've never been to the actual festival before, although I had been to one of the farms. Jake organized the trip, even renting a van so we could all go comfortably in one vehicle with room enough for lavender purchases from five different gardening and lavender fanatics. We met up without incident (mostly), got on the ferry, and off on our way. Unfortunately, adventures in bad traffic continued into Sunday. On the way out, we were stopped dead for half an hour while the bridge opened for a nuclear submarine (!). While we could have done without the delay, it was pretty cool to see the sub in person. They're much bigger than you might think. On the way back, it was just pure bad traffic in terms of too many people coming back from weekending combined with late ferries.

But it was all worth it for the festival itself. I had a fantastic time. The steam extraction and distillation demonstrations were interesting, the farms were *gorgeous*, the weather was perfect (not too hot, not too cold, sunny with a decent breeze), there were tons of nifty plants and lavender-based things and other arts and crafts to check out, several of the local apirists had really wonderful honey at extremely good prices, the crowds were surprisingly reasonable, and the company could not be beat. It was just about as perfect as could be hoped.

Well, except for a couple of the bands (every farm had live music), but even the bad ones could have been worse.

A truly fantastic weekend, all things considered. Of course I'm dead tired this morning, and I didn't get a lick of writing in, or for that matter any work done (either gardening or housework or work-work, all of which I really needed to do), but it was worth it.

Glad you're feeling better! :) Glad you had a good weekend in spite of the bad traffic. Must have been going around...cause traffic down to the twinny's and back Friday and Saturday sucked, major. *gentle hug*

Sorry to hear you were feeling crappy, but glad to know it didn't last overlong and you were still able to enjoy your weekend--despite craptastic traffic.

I've been thinking about making lavender shortbread. It's on the list, but first I must make vanilla honey custard.

Okay, you need to invite me over for that. Of course, if you do, I could lend you some lavender-orange blossom honey to use... ;-)

I made the stove-top version today with mixed results--entirely due to me not paying attention right at the end. I still need to try the oven-baked version. Unless you want to try making it for me? ;)
