Of garden cucumbers and dance greats
Jul. 28th, 2009 08:29 amYesterday I harvested the first cucumber from my garden. It was just a baby, maybe three inches long, and spiny all over the way cucumbers can be. But I wanted to know if my cucumbers were going to be any good. This is the first year I've grown them where the plants have actually matured enough to fruit, instead of dying of some kind of wilt or rot or being destroyed by snails before they got more than a few inches high. As you can imagine, I was quite excited. I picked it (carefully; those spines are sharp), brought it inside, washed it, peeled it, and cut it up to share with
fisherbear.
It was *delicious.* Hurrah!!!
In sadder news, I found out this morning that we lost one of the great artistic minds of the 20th century on Sunday.
Merce Cunningham, 1919 - 2009
He lived a full and amazingly productive life, but still, the world seems a little poorer with his loss.
