I made cookies today, for the first time in a very long time, indeed. Specifically I made my Grandma H.'s Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip cookies, which is what I grew up calling "chocolate chip cookies," and which beat the PANTS off of any other chocolate chip cookies I encountered while growing up. Grandma's chocolate-chip cookies were one of the holy trinity of homemade cookies in my family, the others being Molasses Crinkles and (Cookie X).*

I made her chocolate-chip cookies a lot when I was younger, for school parties and bake sales and family get-togethers and so on. I hadn't made the recipe in a while, not really needing the temptation of dozens of some of the best-damned-cookies-on-the-planet in my house. However, making these cookies isn't something I forget, evidently. I hardly even needed to look at the recipe. Cookie dough was made, cookie dough was (mostly**) not eaten but dropped onto cookie sheets and baked into cookies, cookies were cooled and placed in containers for transit. A few cookies were eaten with tea, but two containers of cookies made it unmolested into my parents' house.

Walking in the door, I picked up my 18-month-old nephew, juggled him and containers of cookies, and opened one container, intending to give him his first taste. Before I could even set the lid down, my nephew blithely and swiftly reached down, grabbed the biggest cookie in easy reach, and bit into it.

My fussy, food-indifferent nephew. Okay, maybe not always, but he's never been what I call an enthusiastic eater, at least not in my experiences with him. And he's a skinny kid.

No indifference here. A happy smile lit up his face, and he proceeded to nom-nom-nom on that cookie with enthusiasm and determination until the entire cookie was consumed.

Mission accomplished. The next generation has been introduced to the chocolate-chip cookies. Grandma would be proud.

* All of us have three favorite cookies, and two of them are the chocolate-chip cookies and the Molasses Crinkles, but the identity of (Cookie X) varies, depending on which family member you ask. For some it is Oatmeal Crispies. For others, her peanut-butter cookies. Still others put Mom's Spritz cookies as the third, or even the Mexican Wedding Cakes. But always three there are.

** As awesome as Grandma's chocolate chip cookies are when baked, the raw dough is even better.*** And no, none of us ever got sick from eating the raw dough.

*** Thinking about it, this might explain some of why I've never cared for cookie-dough ice cream. It isn't made with that dough, and so it always disappoints. Hm.

YAY! for passing on the love of family recipies to the next gen.

My family tradition with cookies is that every Christmas, we make Grandma's Molasses Cookies. They're probably my fav family recipie for cookies.

I'm sorta sure I've had your Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies before. I much prefer chocolate chips (or butterscotch chips) in my Oatmeal cookies than raisins. :D
