...when it works. [livejournal.com profile] fisherbear was complaining this weekend (again) about how no one is reading his blog. I pointed out that he really should start cross-posting summations of his geeknet blog to his LJ, so that he'd get some exposure on friends' lists. He has since followed through with that idea, but with the following comment:

"Yesterday JauntHie bugged me again about moving my weblog (www.fisherbear.net) over to LiveJournal. It's not going to happen (I like my Geeklog calendar way too much, and I'm having fun playing around with PHP) but she has convinced me to at least post a summary here on LJ, just to improve the odds that people notice it."

*sigh*

Did I bug him? Evidently, but that wasn't my intent.

Did I suggest he give up his Geeklog account in favor of LJ? No I did not.

Am I annoyed beyond reason that he has comments turned off on his LJ, so I cannot attempt to set the record straight by commenting directly on his post, but instead am writing a blog post of my own on the subject? You betcha.

Am I aware how completely ridiculous this whole "blog post in response to a blog post" action is, particularly between a married couple? Well of course. Talk about a 21st-century comedy...not to mention communications breakdown...

All that being said, you really should check out his latest posts. His commentary on Randy Gordon is hysterical.

I wasn't able to find an RSS feed on his Geeknet blog, but if it's something he can turn on, then it will be completely possible to read it from LJ (although we'd have to click-through to comment, but that's no big deal.)

Woot! Communication! What a concept. (...Mostly resists the temptation to add more circular references...)

Anyhow, I had no idea that comments were turned off on my LJ page - I left the default settings alone when I signed up, and attributed the complete lack of comments there to the equally complete lack of content. (It seemed reasonable.)

And yeah, I can turn on the RSS feed. I'll try to get to it tonight.

OK, [livejournal.com profile] fisherbear, you're officially one of my "friends." I assume that that it's retroactive in that you can now see older locked entries of mine such as "y'all are the best," yes?

(From someone who actually has commented on your blog)

In the interest of setting expectations...

Just a note that I rarely comment on political stuff. Strong early influences convinced me that, yeah, Republicans are evil, and I'm almost never surprised and very seldom amused by their most recent atrocities. Do I agree with pinko posts? You bet. Do I feel a strong need to "add value" to such reports? Don't count on it. (Nothing personal.)

No worries. I'm not really out to be a comment hound. What started this whole discussion wasn't that no one was commenting, but that no one was even reading (presumably in large part because only three people knew there was anything to read.) That led to a discussion of the utility of friends pages, which led to a discussion of the relative merits of moving to LJ vs. not, etc., etc., etc.

As for the political stuff, my original intention was to stay the hell out of it, but I seem to be incapable of that. The best I can do is to try to make sure I put in at least a little bit of creative thought beyond "OMG teh GOP suxxors" or the usual partisan bloggle. (For instance, I rather enjoyed writing the letter to Sen. Santorum.)
