A few weeks ago, someone (I think at a party) brought up the "who would play you in a movie about your life?" question to the room. Aside from the fact that my life is by no means movie material (read: extremely normal and boring), I had never even considered the idea, much less come up with someone to "play" me. I was initially surprised by how many of the other people in the room had ready answers to the question. Then again, most of the people in the room perform in one way or another, so I figured it was more of a natural thought.

This isn't the first time the meme has come up recently, and it's sprouted up again in the form of "what famous person have you been told that you look like?" To which I have to truthfully answer:

No one has *ever* said I look like anyone famous. To the best of my recollection, it's never come up.

Apparently this also makes me odd one out amongst my acquaintance. Maybe it's because I've never been appearance-obsessed (or even particularly concerned), maybe it's because I don't follow popular culture much if at all, but it's just never happened. And now that the question has come up, I have to say I can't think of a single celebrity who looks anything like me. Those friends and acquaintances of mine who claim look-alikes, I can definitely see it (some more than others, but all clear similarities). But me? Nope.

And this doesn't really surprise me when I stop to think about it in any depth. You see, I'm not just an American mutt, I'm a really odd genetic mix of an American mutt, even by our melting-pot standards. Everyone has a gene pool to pull from, of course, but I think mine is deeper than some others thanks to the mix. My siblings - who fully share in the same pool - don't look much if anything like me, or even each other (although they look more like each other than either of them does to me). Each of us look somewhat like one or more of our relatives, but there's no close resemblances, none of the "can't tell you apart from your mother/aunt/great-grandmother at that age" kind of thing.

Which isn't to say that there haven't been other-people resemblances remarked on in the family. In high school, one of my siblings looked rather like a classmate who turned out to be a distant cousin. With the right clothes on, another can do a pretty good imitation of a comedian who might also be a distant relative. But again, both of those are likely shares-some-genes squint-and-you-might-see-some-similarities matches. Given the weird combination of heritages, I think that there's just fewer people that "look" like me, so the odds of one of those lookers also being famous is just smaller.

Still, it would be fun to play the game. And if I ever do have the kind of life that gets portrayed in a movie (but really, I'd rather not!), I think I'll be happy to settle for talented actor rather than any real resemblance between us.

I had better answers for this when I was younger and, by extension, had fuller hair, but I have to admit I'm not sure who I'd go with these days.

I've had people tell me that I look like Rhea Pearlman and that I remind them of Lucy of Peanuts. ::rolleyes::

Sometimes I wish I had never heard that. LOL
