In which I garden in spite of the weather
Mar. 28th, 2010 03:58 pmIt was a lovely spring day yesterday: sunny, warm, and calm. Naturally I spent most of the day indoors. I had a number of prior commitments, and besides which, Jake and I were scheduled to garden in my yard on Sunday.
Well, you know about plans and spring. Jake called last night to let me know she was sick and not going to be able to make it. This happens; there's a lot of crap going around right now. And of course this morning dawned cloudy and wet.
Nonetheless, gardening remained firmly on the agenda. Why? Because I bought a few plants last weekend, and have some starts that are ready to go outside, and had five more plants delivered during the week, including J's memorial rose. These all HAD to get planted, no matter what. And the forecast for the next several days is rain, rain, and more rain, so...
I did go to spin class this morning, so naturally the weather was partially cloudy with a few sunbreaks. By the time I got back home, it was raining. I waited a little, and the weather cleared up, with hopeful-looking breaks in the clouds. I quickly got out all the things that needed planting, along with the planting supplies and equipment. I figured out where I wanted to plant each plant, got all the baby starts in the ground, got the first two plants planted, interred the container with J's ashes and placed the rose over him...
...and the heavens opened up. GAH. But I was already far too into the process to stop, and the plants really needed to get into the ground. So I kept on, and the rain came and went and came again, and eventually all the plants were planted. So yay that. And I don't have to worry about watering them today. :-p
Of course, I wound up wet, muddy, and completely filthy. Fortunately the washing machine is right next to the garage, because I really didn't want to wear those clothes into the house. Everything went straight into the wash (well, except for my gardening shoes, which just stay dirty - and don't come into the house proper.) But I hope the next round of gardening isn't quite so challenging.
