Friday morning pick-me-up
Jun. 4th, 2010 09:02 amGah. It's Friday, there's too much to do, I'm tired and ooked and running around in circles already and it's not yet 9 a.m.. Time to share a little gem I discovered this week, to help perk up the day.
I don't get a chance to listen to the radio much anymore, at least not compared to my younger years, so it's easy for me to miss out on interesting new artists and the like. And of course the radio stations around here play already-popular stuff much more often than not, so the statistical odds of my hearing something new and unusual while actually near a radio are much lower than not. But lo and behold, as I was driving down the road running an errand this week, my attention was completely captured by the music coming from one particular station - stuff that sounded much more like what the Mountain used to play than their current trend in playlists:
(Sorry, you'll have to click through on the link to see it, and I'm not sure the links will show up if you're not logged in to LJ. Apparently LJ has changed their embedding behavior, and I haven't figured all of it out yet.)
I loved it. I had to find out who the heck these people were. So when I got home, I did a little Internet scouting around. The above song is Tamacun, and the artists are Rodrigo y Gabriela, and all that sound is coming from just the two of them and their guitars. Apparently they met while in heavy-metal bands (!) and bonded over their earlier training in Spanish classical guitar. They decided to ditch the metal scene and go on the road, just the two of them. And they totally rule.
Being more or less completely square and behind the times, maybe all the rest of you have encountered these two already, and this is old news to you. But if you haven't, here's another of their original tunes, Hanuman:
(And I love that her French is about as good as mine these days, but she's trying anyway.) But they haven't forgotten their metal roots, either. Here's part of their cover of Metallica's Orion (the whole thing goes over 7 minutes):
Their take on "One" is pretty rockin', too. Oh, heck, just go check them out (go here if you weren't able to view any of the above). And then go buy one (or more) of their albums. I did - and I'm thinking about picking up more.
Good stuff. Or at least it suits me. :)
Happy Friday!
