A weekend that was actually a weekend
Aug. 15th, 2010 09:14 pmLike just about everyone else, my weekends are usually packed full of the chores and other things that I don't get around to during the week. They're productive, and often fun in parts, but they're very rarely relaxing, and almost never entirely frivolous.
This weekend?
Entirely frivolous.
It started on Friday night, when
fisherbear and I went out to a movie. For the first time in 2010. No, we don't get out much, and movies are pretty low on the list. Which doesn't mean that there aren't movies we want to see; there are lots of those. We just don't get around to it very often. And let's face it, the modern movie-going experience a) costs a lot, b) is often very unsatisfactory, between the people who talk/text/phone in the theater, the overamped sound systems, the poor print/projection quality, and the generally crappy state of said theaters, and c) is frequently poorly timed to fit into my schedule.
Friday night's solution? A neighborhood second-run theater, where tickets costs $3. Yes, the building is old, and the print wasn't in mint condition, but the sound was great, the building was CLEAN (when was the last time you saw THREE theater staff rush in after the previous showing and clean the place top to bottom before letting in the next showing's crowd? True story.), the crowd was enthusiastic and respectful, and the staff was genuinely friendly. And hey, the movie was good, too; both fisherbear and I enjoyed it despite some real howlers of plot/science/physics. We had a great time.
Saturday morning, we set out on the weekend getaway trip we'd had to postpone the previous weekend due to B's illness. (For the record, he's pretty much back to his normal self.) We went on a scenic highway trip, stayed overnight in the other part of the state, and came back today. We took pictures. We saw birds and insects and even an ermine. We went hiking. We had fun. And we relaxed away from it all.
It was, in fact, quite fantastic. Although there's no way I could do this often, I certainly wouldn't mind more weekends like this last one.
