Banned Books - have you read any lately?
Sep. 27th, 2010 07:51 pmIt's banned books week, and in honor of it (and in my own little protest of the idea of banning books in the first place), I'd like to review the last few years' "Most Requested to be Banned" books from the list released by the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom - and star each one I've read. Feel free to play along.
Top 10 for 2009:
1. ttyl, by lauren myracle - Never heard of it, I confess.
2. And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell* - Yep, in the children's section. It's cute!
3. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky - Nope, haven't heard of this one either.
4. To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee* - Who hasn't?
5. Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer* - Yep, I was curious.
6. The Catcher In The Rye, by J.D. Salinger* - for school, a long time ago
7. My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult - The author's name sounds familiar, for some reason
8. The Earth, My Butt, And Other Big Round Things, by Carolyn Mackler - I am putting this one on my library list right now, just for the title! :-D
9. The Color Purple, by Alice Walker* - Another school assignment
10. The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier* - Ancient years ago, and I can't remember now if I finished it or not.
Items from 2007 and 2008 that did not make the 2009 list:
His Dark Materials Trilogy, by Philip Pullman* - I confess I did not make it through the third one - I got bored and the author really pissed me off.
Scary Stories, by Alvin Schwartz - I've read lots of scary stories, but I don't think I've seen this particular collection.
Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya - Never heard of this one either.
Gossip Girl #1, by Cecily Von Ziegesar - Is this what the TV show is based on? (No, I've never seen it either.)
Uncle Bobby's Wedding, by Sarah S. Brannen - Another one I've never heard of.
The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini - At least I've heard of this one, but I haven't read it.
Flashcards of My Life, by Charise Mericle Harper - Nope, not heard of it before
Olive's Ocean, by Kevin Henkes - I've heard of it, but not read it as far as I remember.
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou* - another one I read in school
It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health, by Robie H. Harris - I read something *like* this when I was an early teen, but I don't think it was this exact book
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain* - I read my GRANDMOTHER'S copy of this before I turned double digits.
I must say I feel pretty out of touch; I really haven't heard of a lot of these. How about you? How many of these have you read?
