L-cat earns her second name, yet again
Oct. 11th, 2010 09:09 amSo L-cat continues to improve. She had a fever the first few days, and the vet gave us stronger antibiotics to help fight any infection (infection not being a surprise when you've had to open a four-inch incision into the guts). The vet also instructed us to feed her small amounts of food (like a tablespoon or two of the special kibble they sent us home with) multiple times a day, rather than the usual feeding schedule of once in the morning and once in the evening.
For the first few days, this wasn't too difficult to manage. L-cat's appetite was still low, practically dainty, so keeping the boys off of her food was a challenge. And getting her to be interested in food was also something of a challenge, particularly as she much prefers her usual food to the low-residue prescription stuff. But a few drops of low-sodium chicken broth on the kibble worked wonders.
Then L-cat started feeling better, and things got easier. She would let us know that she was hungry, and we'd give her a tablespoon of kibble, and she'd eat it fairly quickly, enough so that the boys didn't go totally wild with jealousy. Score.
And now she's feeling even better. Not quite normal, no; she's still low-energy, and she still has that healing monster incision (she gets her stitches out this week). But her appetite has definitely improved, and is near full-force.
Which reminds us why we almost named her Hoover. She vaccums up her food like you wouldn't believe. And she really, REALLY likes the idea of being able to demand food multiple times a day. She's starting to sing about it.
Let's hope breaking the you-can-demand-food-and-we'll-feed-you habit isn't too hard to break, when the time comes.
