Ephemeral art
Oct. 31st, 2010 08:46 pmFor whatever reason, I am drawn to artforms that are, by their very natures, ephemeral. For example, pumpkin-carving. Not that I'm any kind of artist at it - for that you need to see what Luthien can do with a big pumpkin - but I really enjoy carving pumpkins into an assortment of weird and amusing faces. I enjoy it so much I went to two pumpkin-carving parties this year, and enjoyed the heck out of them. Here's some of the guests' results from one:

To see larger versions of these pictures, click each to get to the gallery, and then click the picture again to see full size. The big, elaborately-carved jack-o-lantern in the back of the first image is Luthien's work - and she wasn't even close to done.
But yes, pumpkin-carving. Or gingerbread-cookie decoration, as those of you who've read this journal for a while have seen. And this year, I added a few apple-head dolls to the Halloween decorations awaiting the trick-or-treaters, just because:
There are three dolls. They were difficult to photograph, as they were really designed to be seen in person than in pictures, but I did my best. This is Azalea:

This is Fennel:

And this is Maple:

I'm rather pleased with them, although they're nowhere near perfect.
The apple-dolls will amuse the trick-or-treaters tonight, and go into the worm bin tomorrow, along with the jack-o-lanterns. And so it goes.
