Someone called in a BIG favor with the weather gods, and as a result, we've had gorgeous weather here the last few days. That's right, it's a beautiful WEEKEND. The kind of warm, sunny, clear weather that reminds you forcefully that this is one of the most beautiful places in the world to live. The kind of breezy, blue-skies days that makes everyone feel glad. And the kind of temperatures that have at last let me plant out my basil plants, which have been living under the grow light in the furnace room for over a MONTH now.  Yes, I'll need to cloche them when the weather returns to colder-and-wetter-than-normal (currently forecast for Monday), but still, they're in the ground.

The first of the jam roses opened their buds this morning. I figure I've got anywhere from a day to a week before I have enough blooming to make jam. Mmm, jam!

The first bean plants have poked through the soil. So far only the violet podded ones, though. No sign yet of the kentucky blues. I hope those didn't rot in the ground or something annoying like that...

The oriental poppies are going nuts. I have one orange, two blood-red, and one red-and-black striped blooming at the moment. And so far, no sign of any vandalism against the flower beds, which is a welcome change.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the lettuce bed and the onion bed, both of which continue to be torn up by the local cat population in search of a litterbox. String trellising over the ground serves to keep them out, mostly, particularly when combined with a prone tomato trellis, but I don't want to have to go buy more string netting. Anyone have any suggestions on what works to keep kitties out of raised beds?

Oh, and the iris rhizomes that a co-worker gave me because she had too many of them, and that have kind of just pooped along, never producing any buds over the last several years? Covered in bloom stalks this year. The first flowers just opened. My co-worker said they were ordinary purple.

The first ones blooming are deep burgundy, with bronze throats and orange stamens.  Utterly unusual and completely stunning.

Spring is finally here in my garden, and I'm thrilled.
