Quick M-cat update: the ultrasound revealed no abnormalities. In fact, the veterinarian at the clinic was actively (and visibly) chuffed at getting to deliver *good* news for a change. Given that the vet practice that had the ultrasound machine is an emergency-care clinic, I can understand why he rarely gets to see perfectly normal insides on his monitor, or give good news to worried owners. He was practically beaming when he told me that M's liver looked fine, that the gall bladder had some "sludge" but no actual visible stones, and while his kidneys were a bit brighter than average (and no, we're not talking IQ, although with M-cat it wouldn't be utterly shocking if he thought with his kidneys...), that was well within normal expectations for an older cat.
So M's primary vet has cleared him for getting his teeth cleaned and the mysterious lump removed and biopsied, and we've scheduled the appointment. I'm hoping everything else goes as well as this did.
