And Gandhi Wept
Jul. 7th, 2005 07:57 amAt least four bombs exploded in London today, blowing up subway cars and buses. 33 people are already confirmed dead, with the death toll expected to rise. Countless more are wounded. In what I am sure was unintended irony, one of the bus-bombs exploded directly in front of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, who showed the world a much more peaceful - and successful - way of protesting injustice through civil disobedience and eschewing violence. Despite his success in winning independence and self-rule for his country (the most-often cited "justification" of their heinous crimes these mass murderers claim), it's a way the rest of the world appears to have forgotton or incapable of learning. It's on days like these that I really find it difficult not to believe that humans generally suck.
Sadly, this is hardly the first time terrorists have detonated bombs in London, and given the state of the world, it's not likely to be the last, either. Nor is London likely to be the last city bombed, either, just as various cities in Palestine and Israel weren't, Madrid wasn't, and New York wasn't. My deepest sympathies to all the victims directly and indirectly affected by these attacks.
