The amazing chocolatier
Jul. 16th, 2005 08:36 amThanks to the organizing talents of SunKrux, I saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tonight in the company of
fisherbear, humilitas, Luthien, RocketMan, and two of RocketMan's buddies. Fun movie, and Johnny Depp was wonderful as usual. This was a tough part to sell, and by and large he did a great job doing it. Deep Roy, who played all of the Ooompa-Loompas, was just amazing. In fact, all of the performances were good. I only have two complaints: one, that the powers-that-be were so intent on disguising Danny Elfman's very distinctive singing voice that they sacrificed comprehensibility for distortion, and two, the father plot was a bit extraneous and cut into time that could have been better spent developing the book characters. The first quibble is the most serious, as Dahl's Oompa-Loompa lyrics are utterly delightful, and it's a serious drawback that you can't understand any of them (or at least I couldn't). You're not going to be leaving the theatre singing any of the songs, as you did with the "Oompa-Loompa-doopedy-doo" song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Definitely go see this in the theatre if you have a chance - the visuals deserve the big screen. If you take kids to it, realize beforehand that this is a horror movie for children, and be prepared accordingly.

Awww, it was my pleasure
