My gadget-loving husband has been diligently researching GPS units for me to use when out walking, so I can lose the dependency on city streets and sites like MapQuest and go walking wherever I like with an accurate recording of how far I've gone. I've been vaguely intrigued, but not really hyper-eager...until today. Today I went walking with my co-worker B, who just happens to have one of these spiffy gadgets. We went wandering all over campus, and at the end of the walk not only could he tell me exactly how far we'd gone (2.17 miles), but what our rate of speed was (averaged 2.8 miles per hour), what our exact route had been, our overall elevation change (338 feet), and a long so on. My geeky side was duly impressed. I'm going to have to invest in one of them thar goodies...

On another happy-making note, what with the walk with B and the early morning walk to the van, I'm already up 3.88 miles for the day. I should wind up over five, which given that I only had to do 3 today, has me feeling quite pleased with myself.

You can borrow my GPS anytime and indefinitely. It was supposed to accompany me on hikes, but the darn thing seems to be allergic to trees. Someone might as well get some use out of it.
