I was going to title this entry "Turkey Day Fast Approacheth", but there's nothing fasting-like about Thanksgiving, even when one is planning on being reasonable, rather than eating everything in sight. But Thanksgiving is indeed just around the corner, and I'm having fun planning for it, even if I did just get off a plane on Saturday and promptly went to work all day Sunday. I'm hosting Thanksgiving for anyone who wants to come, as most of my family is out of town this year, and Grandma J doesn't feel up to coming. So far it sounds like it will be me, [livejournal.com profile] fisherbear, Mama Bear, and [livejournal.com profile] hiker_chick, with a few other maybes. I've already picked up the potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, celery, and onion, and will be picking up the fresh turkey on Tuesday for brining before roasting. And yes, that method really does work well, and doesn't wind up salty. I'll be cooking small portions of lots of favorites (mashed potatoes, stuffing, bourbon sweet potatoes) and a big batch of veggies, so people can have bites of everything they like best without feeling like they have to stuff themselves. And of course I'll be roasting a big turkey, because turkey leftovers are just necessary.

I'm still debating on what to do for dessert; fisherbear is lobbying for sweet-potato pecan pie, while I'm leaning towards Grandma H's pecan pie recipe. Of course the stores might all be out of pecans, in which case it's likely to be my mom's Pumpkin Chiffon Pie.

If you're interested in joining us for turkey and company on Thursday, drop me a line. :-)
