The true meaning of Christmas?
Dec. 17th, 2005 08:15 pmFox News (among others) has been going on for weeks about how there's an anti-Christmas sectarian conspiracy out there, determined to deprive Christians of expressions of their faith, such as Nativity scenes, Christmas trees (not "Holiday trees"), and the very expression of "Merry Christmas" ("happy holidays" doesn't cut it). You can find Bill O'Reilly's commentary on this here. Similarly, major news outlets such as the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune (check out this article here) have also been reporting a significant movement suppressing Christian worship and Christmas: megachurches around the country cancelling Sunday services on December 25 - because it's Christmas.
""At first glance it does sound contrarian," said Willow Creek senior pastor Gene Appel, whose 10,000+ member church will not be having services on Sunday, December 25. "We don't see it as not having church on Christmas. We see it as decentralizing the church on Christmas—hundreds of thousands of experiences going on around Christmas trees."
Opening presents and checking out the candy and toys left in the stockings by Santa Claus, and maybe watching a mass-produced DVD on the true meaning of Christmas.
As far as I know, no word yet from Mr. O'Reilly on this latest attack on Christmas.
As for me, I find the concept of churches cancelling Sunday services - CHRISTMAS services! - because it's CHRISTMAS to be mind-boggling.
