fisherbear and I were doing our grocery shopping today. We had apples on our (long) list of groceries to buy, and we figured we'd get one of our staple varieties for this time of year: Fuji, or Gala, or Honeycrisp. But on his way back from the large fruit section, he noticed a little basket set on a barrel...filled with
Winesap apples, food of the gods. They are a dark, dark red, late-ripening apple - I've always thought of them as the quintessential Snow White apple. They do not travel well, but have exquisite fragrance, taste, and texture. Winesaps are very rarely available in grocery store, never in large quantities, and I've never seen them for sale as late as December, much less the week before Christmas.
Hurrah!
Me so jealous!!
