No, this isn't the latest lineup of shows from ABC. This is a summation of the fantastic evening I had last night with Humilitas. I dashed home from work, got all gussied up in fancy dress, and then drove over to pick up Humilitas and head on downtown for dinner and an opera. The dinner was excellent Thai; I ordered one of my faves, Evil Jungle Prince, whereas Humilitas tried a new dish, Three Drunkards Harmony. Very, very tasty, and the Drunkards dish was thematically appropriate to the opera, too (there were definitely drunken harmony moments in the opera, but while the opera also featured a Prince and a jungle-like ballroom, (s)he wasn't really evil). We then walked over to the opera house for Die Fledermaus, which was outstanding. I remembered loving this comic opera when I saw it back in the early 80's, but it's been long enough that I'd forgotten a lot about why. Now I remember. Fabulous music, great performances, pratfalls, jokes ranging from the time the opera was written all the way up through modern TV and politics, and (really bringing me back to my early opera days) all in English. Plus four of the principals were returnees from this summer's Ring cycle, so the Wagner jokes (including musical jokes) were fast and furious and deliciously fun to try and spot. A truly wonderful evening that renewed yet again my love for opera and fun evenings out on the town. Looking at the 2006-7 season schedule just posted, I think I might have to break down and subscribe, if I can find someone else to go with. Opera, while always worthwhile, is much more fun as a shared experience.
