[livejournal.com profile] fisherbear and I went out today for movie-and-a-dinner (i.e., we saw a movie, and then later on we went out for sushi). We went to see Good Night and Good Luck as part of preparation for tomorrow's Oscar party at LawyerLady's house.

Wow. Just...wow.

Good Night and Good Luck is one fantastic movie, and once it's released on DVD, one I desperately hope will be shown in middle- and high-school history and government classes all around the country for at least the next 10 years. Everyone should see this movie. And as for the demagogues who have harrangued against it as yet another example of the Hollywood liberal media bias, they completely missed the point.

But then of course they would.

Do yourself a favor. If you haven't seen this movie yet, get out there and see it in the theaters if you can. If you can't, rent or buy it on DVD as soon as it's available. It's that good.

On a completely trivial Oscar level, the movie completely deserved the noms for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role. George, however, was rightly NOT nominated for this in supporting actor; he was good but not really great. He must have been much better in Syriana, which I have not seen.

Do I have an opinion on what movie should win the Best Picture category at the Oscars? I do, although I admit I've only seen two of the five - this and Brokeback Mountain. Of the two pictures, I would say that as much as I enjoyed Brokeback Mountain (and it's a brilliant movie), Good Night and Good Luck deserves the win more. But Brokeback will win long before Good Night and Good Luck will, because as much as the "gay romance" issue might bother some, the civic responsiblity/bread-and-circuses message in Good Night and Good Luck will bother people much, much more. As well it should.
