Because it was the safest story of any of the five films nominated. Gee, racial tensions in Los Angeles? Who'd've thunk it? (Having lived in LA for some years, including during the Rodney King riots, I'm highly suspicious of this film - which I admit I haven't seen.) Personally, I was rooting for Good Night and Good Luck.
I'm also disappointed that several of the big-award winners were cut off mid-speech - even (maybe especially) Crash's acceptance speech for best picture. While I don't agree with the win, it's the height of stupid to cut off the acceptance speech for the biggest award of the night. Next time, Oscar, ditch the film montages and let the big winners gush a little more.
Due to technical difficulties, I didn't see all of Jon Stewart's hosting, but what I did see was funny and kept the show moving, which is after all what the host needs to do.
