A few political thoughts - but just a few
May. 25th, 2006 07:11 amSome of you might have noticed that I haven't blogged many political thoughts in the last few weeks. Partially that's been a factor of time, but I've also been trying to give myself a little bit of a mental break from the horrors of this current administration and its pathetic "opposition party". It's depressing, and although I still refuse to look away and become ignorant, I just don't have the time and energy to devote to writing up many thoughts on it right now. Yes, I'm still far more pissed at the Republican party, but I'm also deeply disappointed in the incompetence of the Democrats, who can't seem to organize themselves to say anything coherent or block any of the really nasty legislation coming down the pike. This country desperately needs a) a new party to represent the moderate, do-the-right-thing, fiscally and socially responsible folks whom I still believe (despite everything) are really the majority, and b) a resurgence of the political idea that you're a statesman/representative first, and a party member second. Neither seems to be on the immediate horizon, but we have to keep trying.
And sometimes there comes a reminder that yes, there are others out there also trying, or at least taking a moment, and if nothing else, they give you a chuckle. For instance, there's this site, pointed out by
sunkrux and
monkeybard:

No, it's probably not doing much (although we can hope it might help the rest of the world not give up entirely on our country). The Web site is Sorry Everybody. While I can't and wouldn't apologize for democracy (and let's face it, Bush got the majority of the vote the second time around), I am certainly sorry a plurality of the voters in 2004 were so stupid. If I ever made one and sent it in, mine would have to read:
I voted for the other guy - twice
My state voted for the other guy - twice
We're working to wisen up the rest of the country soon
In the meantime, please excuse our mess
We're trying to clean it up as quickly as possible
...or possibly something much more rude, depending on my mood. ;-) But we do have to keep trying to clean up the mess, because whether we voted for him and his cronies or not, it's our country, and our responsibility. And we do have the power to change it.
