Spooooooners!
Jun. 12th, 2006 07:52 amLocal strawberry season is finally here! The Spooners stand went up last week, and they opened for business for the first time this year on Sunday morning.
fisherbear and I were there first thing, and picked up a flat to split with
monkeybard and NordicBoy. Fisherbear and I then went home and indulged ourselves in eating ourselves silly on fresh, just-picked berries, and we will continue to consume serious quantities of fresh berries as long as they last. Oh yum! Oh joy! Oh bliss!
This weekend was unusually humid for this area, and as a consequence yard work wasn't quite as much fun in some ways, but the perfume around my yard was ridiculously strong. On Saturday morning, I could smell the roses in my front yard in a hundred-foot radius without even trying, and the mock orange and the honeysuckle and the sweet peas were all almost as strong. It was lovely! Fisherbear made a yard waste run, as we keep accuulating yard waste faster than the city will pick it up, and we still need to rent a chipper to get rid of all the yew branches. (Fresh mulch for the yard, oh yay!) I also did a fair bit of tidying up and organizing inside the house, in anticipation of being stuck inside next weekend. My goal is to have the upstairs tidy enough that I won't go crazy looking at clutter. Given the way we tend to accumulate and generate clutter, and given my less-than-perfect housecleaning habits (so many things I'd rather be doing than vacuuming) it's a bit of a stretch, but it should be doable.
The DVD stack is looking good.
sunkrux brought me a ton of DVDs to watch, monkeybard has promised more, and I can probably schmooze some from LawyerLady, too. Not to mention the two DVD sets I picked up for myself. Now to make sure I have enough soft foods prepared. Not looking forward to this at all, but as the Bard says, "Readiness is all."

Mmm bees
Date: 2006-06-12 04:45 pm (UTC)As usual, she's not giving herself proper credit. She's been tweaking our front yard for years now, and at this point it's one of the best bee gardens in the city. There were at least ten species out yesterday morning... three bumblebees, three halictids (including our favorite green bees, for the first time this year - woot! - just the females though), a smallish osmia (about half the mass of an orchard mason), a sort of honeybee Mini-Me that I didn't get a close look at, and a psycho little leaf cutter that was going to town on mustard greens (go figure.) Oh, and honeybees, of course - mustn't forget the honeybees. There were also the usual hangers-on - three mimic flies, including one with a bright yellow shoulder cape that I haven't seen before, and several kinds of wasp (but no yellowjackets and only one stray paper wasp, which was nice.)
So, if any of you ever wondered why an otherwise excellent gardener keeps letting her mustard and turnips and kale bolt in the yard... it's because she's married to a nut. :)

But by all means, feel free to praise my garden and gardening skills. :-D *basking in the glory*

Date: 2006-06-12 08:30 pm (UTC)You betcha. I know you want HSM. What else would you like? We have Court Jester. I also recommed Secret Life of Walter Mitty, but we don't own that one (yet). Just let me know and I'll bring 'em over. :)
