It wasn't a bad day yesterday per se, but events and hormones combined in such a way that by the end of the working day I was in an evil, aggravated, absolutely foul mood - quite possibly the worst mood I've been in for quite some time, and certainly the worst mood without real cause I can remember. It's a bit better this morning, but I'm still feeling unusually cynical and bitter and generally pessimistically pissy without any real reason other than the state of the planet in general (which granted is enough to give one hives if you really think about it). In recognition thereof, and out of a desire to avoid taking it out on anyone, I shall now sing the perfect song for moments like this: the Merry Little Minuet.
They're rioting in Africa
They're starving in Spain
There's hurricanes in Florida
And Texas needs rain
The whole world is festering with unhappy souls
The French hate the Germans, the Germans hate the Poles
Italians hate Yugoslavs*, South Africans hate the Dutch
And I don't like anybody very much!
But we can be thankful and tranquil and proud
For Man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud!
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off...
...and we will all be blown away!
There's rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
What Nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man...!
Other than the Yugoslavs line and the starving in Spain line (I don't know that there are any more people starving in Spain than there are in any other first-world countries, which is to say still too many people going hungry), it's kind of frightening how true this song still is, 53 years after it was written. And yeah, it pretty much sums up my mood towards the world right now. Bleh.
There. I feel a little better - a very little little.
