Just as wonderfully bizarre as I remember
Jun. 15th, 2006 08:00 amSo I cheated last night and allowed myself to watch two episodes of The Bugaloos, prior to the whole dental surgery/drooling on pillows while on medications/watch DVDS in semi-conscious druggged state festival, scheduled to start tomorrow. I remember the Bugaloos (and most of Sid and Marty Krofft's shows) very fondly from the '70's, but I wasn't sure how well they'd hold up now. While I'm certainly more aware now of some of the questionable production values (did they give the actors any training in flight harnesses before stringing them up?), it turns out I still love the show, warts and all. Goofy Brit accents, corny costumes, and of course the fabulous Martha Raye chewing up scenery in every possible direction. I have no idea if anyone who didn't watch it back then would like it now (or even understand it; the Kroffts really must have been beaming in from their own planet), but for me, it's a wonderful campfest with just enough snark to cut the sweetness without ever winding up anything other than good-natured.
