Very, very scary
Jul. 6th, 2006 10:36 amI find this image terrifying for a number of reasons.

Yes, that's the newly-consecrated The Statue of Liberation Through Christ, in Memphis, TN. And a national symbol of liberty and welcome for all has been transformed into a representation of the worst aspects of Christianist bigotry and exclusionism (the pastor who put this 72-foot statue up believes, among other things, that aspects of his statue represent God's response to what he calls the nation's ills, including "secularism and humanism." That's right, John Locke is the founder of one of our nation's ills.)
As someone whose Catholic maternal grandmother came through Ellis Island, I'm officially appalled.
